Free Crochet Pattern for Poppy Troll Hat
My daughter loooooooooves the Movie Trolls. We listen to the album probably everyday on our Alexa. I know every word, to every song. Luckily there are two movies, so we’ve moved on to the second one, so there has been a little change up.
I love to make Halloween costumes, it’s something I remember doing with my mom when I was younger, and I hope to keep the tradition alive with my kids. This year we all went as Trolls characters. My son was Branch, my fiance was Biggie, and my daughter was Poppy.
I trolled (pun intended, I’m a dork) the internet for how to make a Poppy hat. Being a crocheter I knew I was going to incorporate crochet somehow. And I really liked the look of the tulle, and how it stood up on its own.
After a long search I ultimately decided to make up my own pattern for it. I recently received a custom order for one, and I’m kicking myself for not writing everything I did down.
So, I decided to do just that, and offer it as a free pattern here on the blog.
Materials:
- 5.0 mm H hook
- worsted weight yarn in pink and green, I used Impeccable by Loops & Threads in soft rose, and
- Tulle- I used a spool of a Hot pink color I found at Hobby Lobby, cutting tool can be a pain, so the spool was a live saver. Watch out for sales at Hobby Lobby, they typically run them every other week on certain things. I got 40 yards for $1.47!
- Felt in light blue, and green- I used some scraps but you can find sheets of felt at almost any craft store. My favorite lately however has been from Benziedesign.com
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- Hot glue gun
- Hair tie
Notes:
- The crocheted head band part is worked in the round with sl st to join
- This pattern was intended for a child size head, so the instructions are written for a toddler, however the pattern can be made to fit any size head, just adjust your initial starting chain
- The ears are crocheted separately using a magic ring or magic circle, and sewed on after. If you need a visual for magic ring, check out this tutorial
- stitch count for ears is shown in parenthesis after each round
- for the sake of this pattern the picot stitch is *ch 2, sl st in second ch from hook*
Abbreviations:
- ch- chain
- inc- increase (2 sc in the same st)
- dec- decrease (1 sc over 2 sts)
- sl st- slip stitch
- sc- single crochet
- st(s)-stitch(es)
- dc- double crochet
- mr- magic ring
- FLO- front loop only
- FO- fasten off
Pattern:
Head Band
R1: ch. 56, careful not to twist your chain, form into a circle and sl st to 1st ch to begin working in the round
R2: ch. 1, sc around, sl st to first sc to join
R3-7: Repeat R2, color change to green
R8: ch. 1, dc in FLO around, sl st to beginning dc to join, FO and weave in ends
By working in the FLO of R8 the back loops are left open to attach the tulle to
Ears: Make 2
5 sc in mr
R1: inc around- (10)
R2: sc around (10)
R3: *sc, inc* repeat around (15)
R4: *sc 2, inc* repeat around (20)
R5: sc around (20)
R6: decx2, sc 5, hdc, (dc, picot, dc) in same st, hdc, sc 8
Adding the Tulle:
The length of tulle depends on how much tulle you have and how many sts you have on your head band. I cut about 24″ pieces of tulle and placed a piece for 3 sts and then skipped one
Since I cut 24″ pieces of tulle my final poppy hair length was 12″ since you are folding it to knot it
Use your crochet hook to pull your tulle strip from the outside in
Pull the two ends through the loop to knot it
Repeat this process around the headband skipping a stitch about every 3-2 sts
Once you’ve done this, gather all your tulle to make a pony tail, I used an actual pony tail holder to secure mine, and then hot glued a strip of blue felt around it
Cut out flower shapes from blue felt as well as green leaf shapes and hot glue evenly around the headband onto the part where you color changed to green and dc around the headband
sew the ears on either side of the head band, weave in all your ends, and you’re done!
Tip:
I took a piece of green thread to match my green yarn, and stitch the double crochets onto the poppy hair to make it extra secure and so the double crochets wouldn’t flop over. You could use hot glue too if you’re in a hurry
If you make this Poppy Trolls hat, I would love to see it! tag me on instagram @fibersbyphoenix so I can see it! 🙂
Happy making!
